Dr. Dan Slaight, a longtime De Smet dentist, receives a Spirit of Community Award during the community’s Fourth of July celebration in Washington Park.
Slaight has spent his years in De Smet actively promoting the community through the De Smet Development Corporation and the De Smet Area Chamber of Commerce.
He will receive his award promptly at 5 p.m. on the stage near the rib barbecue, organizers said. Mogens Heroes, a Sioux Falls band, is scheduled to provide live music on that stage from 5-8 p.m.
Activities for the kids run from 3-7 p.m. with laser tag, a bounce house, mechanical bull and an obstacle course. All these activities are free and will be set up in the old ice rink area just west of the main shelter house and the rest rooms in Washington Park.
A food vendor is scheduled to be in Washington Park all day, Chad Kruse, De Smet Chamber president said.
Rib cookers are coming from Sioux Falls, Webster, Pierre, Lake Poinsett and De Smet. Ten teams have entered the rib cooking contest, something that has become a July 4 tradition in De Smet.
Rib judging takes place at 4 p.m. The top prize is at least $500, organizers said.
A rib feed is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. There is a $3 per plate charge and a $1 per rib charge for the rib feed. Those attending are encouraged to vote for their favorite ribs. The rib team getting the most votes receives the People’s Choice Award.
Softball games between the local bars and local contractors are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
And the day concludes with a fireworks display by the De Smet Volunteer Fire Department.
