De Smet 2016 Community Guide

As Mayor of the City of De Smet, I would like to welcome you to the ‘Wilder’ life. Our town is small but vibrant with 1100 residents and a warm and friendly feel. We are a progressive minded community committed to providing exceptional services and a wonderful quality of life for all of our residents.

Things are always happening in De Smet We have several exciting projects taking place including the hospital renovation and expansion, new ballfield being constructed to complete our sports complex, town homes being built and new businesses opening. And with our new Event and Wellness Center in full operation, we are hosting many concerts, community theater presentations, conferences and cultural events. The walking path and wellness center stay busy constantly.

There have been weddings, health fairs, wellness programs, benefits, birthday parties and many recreational activities keeping our De Smet residents happy and healthy. The usage for the Center has been tremendous. We hope all visitors as well as the residents of De Smet feel comfortable stopping in at the Center to relax for a while in the comfortable reception area, take a quick tour or to get some exercise.

Every year we welcome thousands of visitors to our town. De Smet is the “Little Town on the Prairie” made famous by author Laura Ingalls Wilder, and is near the birthplace of famous prairie artist Harvey Dunn. We’re also one of South Dakota’s popular hunting and fishing destinations year round.

De Smet provides a wide variety of services and activities for its citizens. A stroll down the streets of our neat, clean town will reveal a full array of retail and service related businesses, a library, our museum, three beautiful city parks, a public swimming pool, a 9-hole golf course and an airport. De Smet is especially proud of its health care facilities that include a hospital, two medical clinics, a chiropractic clinic, dental service and a nursing home. Our excellent K-12 education system is constantly working to provide our students with the cutting edge of technology.

De Smet has it all – a small town atmosphere with many of the amenities of a larger community. We invite you to come and visit our modern frontier community and discover for yourself why De Smet is a great place to live and work – a place you can call home and create your new opportunities.

- Gary Wolkow, Mayor of De Smet
