Athletic Complex Proposal

Wednesday, December 05, 2012

A new athletic complex consisting of a state-of-the-art track modeled on Elkton’s, a new football field, a large 750 person capacity bleachers and a baseball diamond is only $100,000 short of full funding.

“If we have a better athletic facility and track complex, we’re going to draw people into the community,” said Lake Preston resident Bill Wilkinson. “This has the potential to be a huge draw.”

Athletic complex steering committee member Todd Wilkinson presented the proposed complex to a special meeting of the De Smet School Board Nov. 29.

The steering committee estimates the project will require approximately $800,000. The committee’s “dream complex” would be built atop the current Purington Field.

An anonymous donor has offered to provide $2 in matching funds for every $1 donated from the rest of the community up to a maximum $200,000 gift.

Assuming the full $100,000 is obtained from other county sources, this accounts for $300,000.

The remaining $500,000 has been requested through potential capital outlay levy on the De Smet School District.

“I’m for it, this is a way to build for the future with the community,” said president Mike Fox.
