“I'm so proud of these kids,” said coach Tricia Holland. “They have worked hard on the technical aspects of their events throughout the season and it shows in their level of performance.”
Kelsey Poppen competed in high jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles. She finished eighth in the high jump, clearing 4-11 and sixth in the triple jump leaping 32-7.25. She also competed in 100-meter hurdles but did not place. Poppen has signed on as a high jumper for the Dakota State University track team.
Poppen was joined by three teammates from the girls squad. Maria Huntimer missed a state championship in shot put by less than two feet, throwing 37-11.25 and finishing in second place. She also took fourth place in the discus with a throw of 110-5.
High jumper Kayli Buchholz finished fourth with a jump of 4-11. Alex Wolkow finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 49.12.
Christian Small was the only competitor for the boys' team. He competed in the shot put throwing 44-0.75 and missing out on placing by just 7 inches.
“We will certainly miss the contributions from this year's seniors, Kelsey Poppen, Kayli Buchholz, Maria Huntimer, Kyler Aseleson, and Jesse Gebhart,” said Holland. “But the kids we have returning are a dedicated group that have made improvements throughout their involvement in the program.
Next year’s squad will have all the benefits of moving to their shiny new home track.
“I look for field events to continue to be a strength for the team,” Holland said. “I think with next year's combinations of kids we'll be able to put together some additional relays and be stronger in the running events as well.
