De Smet native Noel Bishop visited The De Smet News July 12 with his administrative assistant Suzanne Helchowski, her husband Rich, their children, 17-year-old Mary Jo and 12-year-old Tim, and Bishop’s 8-year-old granddaughter Sarah Bishop of Virginia.

The Helchowskis had only taken vacations to places on the East Coast before and said their first trip to South Dakota was a big change for them.

Judy Williamson of Watertown, Tenn., almost got her dream proposal July 18 at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Homestead.

Her fiancé, Bennie Ray Watkins of Lebanon, Tenn. had planned to ask her to marry him like Almanzo Wilder proposed to Laura Ingalls in the books — on the back of a horse-drawn buggy.
