Tom Hoek was a starting point-guard for the De Smet Bulldogs under coach Marv McCune ten years ago — the last time the boys’ team won a district championship. In 2004, De Smet made it all the way to the state tournament where they brought home the consolation championship trophy.
This year, as head coach for the Bulldogs, Hoek led his team to victory against Castlewood to win the District 5B championship.
“I am extremely proud of the way we came out and took control of the game right away,” Hoek said. “To have never played in this big of a game, the boys really showed their maturity on the basketball court.”
Hoek said winning the districts was the team’s main goal. “But now I think we are starting to believe we can compete and win every game,” he said. “This group has worked extremely hard over the last few years and they are seeing how it can pay off. They deserve this.”
The Bulldogs lost the Region 3B championship Tuesday to James Valley Christian, the top-ranked Class B school in the state, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings.
“It’s always tough to end the year on a loss, especially one game away from the state tournament, but I am extremely proud of this team. They started to believe in something bigger and worked extremely hard this season. It has been a fun ride.” Hoek said. “Last night we made some runs and closed the gap a couple of times, we just couldn’t get over the hump. JVC is a good team and we need to use this as a learning experience for the future.”
