The De Smet News would like to extend its congratulations to the De Smet School District and the project steering committee for putting the finishing touches on an awesome athletic complex just in time for the first football game of the season. The new complex was christened Wilkinson Field by school board President Mike Fox in honor of that family’s large donation.

There was some concern from school board members and from Superintendent Jim Altenburg that the freshly laid sod would suffer a beating during the Arlington game, but Altenburg said at Monday’s school board meeting that he had checked the integrity of the field and everything looked fine. In fact, he said the cleet trampling may actually help by aerating and tamping the new grass.

Football coach Mike Warne was certainly happy and said the field “held up well.” His coaches and team members joined a group of community volunteers who worked all the way up to game time putting the new field in order. The timing was a little tight, as the scoreboard and goal posts went in only last week. “We couldn’t have finished the field without the help of the volunteers,” Warne said.

In Monday’s update to the school board on how the athletic complex project was progressing, Altenburg said “Not much to update, everything that needed to get done, got done.”

He said that striping still needs to be added to the track “before the snow flies” and some bottom tension wire needs to be installed on the fence. There is also a small matter of damages the district is seeking from Bowes Construction for working past the agreed-upon timetable.

Otherwise, mission accomplished — good show people!
