The Main Stop in De Smet and the Handi-Mart in Arlington have partnered with  "Local," a new convenience store brand created and trademarked by Howes Oil Co. of Sioux Falls.

Steve and Laurie Anderson of De Smet own both businesses.

The conversion from Shell to Local is taking place this week in De Smet, and will take place in early July in Arlington. The names The Main Stop and Handi-mart will remain but each store joining Local will be identified by its hometown zip code, making The Main Stop the Local Zip 57231 and Handi-Mart the Local Zip 57212.

In addition to The Main Stop and Handi-Mart, other convenience stores throughout South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and North Dakota have joined with Local.

“I think we can serve the community better with this type of branding. Local is South Dakota based and caters more to smaller communities,” Steve Anderson said. “Shell is a good brand, but the franchise fees were not feasible.”

Anderson said they should be able to do more for the community now in terms of benefits and fundraisers. He said the products will all be the same and they will still get fuel from the same supplier.

“I feel the three most important things for both our stores are customer service, offering great products and store cleanliness,” Anderson said.

“Local will offer c-store owners better competitive flexibility and the ability to remain strong supporters of their local communities,” Howes Oil owner Andy Howes said. "We're excited to be partnering with the folks at The Main Stop and Handi Mart and appreciate the opportunity to give consumers options to keep supporting their local economy. That's our No. 1 goal — to keep it local."
