Kingsbury County Commissioners, acting Oct. 7 as the board of adjustment, approved a conditional-use permit for Monte and Laura Weatherly of Arlington. The Weatherlys plan to build a campground on their property on the north shore of Lake Thompson.

“It is a permitted use for the Lake Park District. The only stipulation is that they follow state laws and comply with setbacks,” Commissioner Joe Jensen said. “As long as they comply with state laws, I recommend that we approve it. It gives people more camping opportunities which can’t help but boost the local economy. I think it’s a very good project.”

The Weatherly’s plan calls for 18 campsites for both long and short-term camping.   They will all have electrical hookups and many will eventually have water and sewer hookups. They do not plan to build a shower house. “Most campers have self-contained showers,” Laura said.

The Weatherlys own the North Shore Bar and Grille and a small cabin. The bar and restaurant are no longer open.

“We are going to be more active renting the cabin,” Laura said. She said that in the past they sometimes stayed at the cabin after working late, or allowed bands to stay there. She said the North Shore building might eventually be used to host events or as a cabin for larger groups. She said if they use it as a cabin, they would have to make some changes to the building, such as installing smoke alarms and changing the doors to make it look more like a residence.

John Christianson, manager of the Lake Thompson State Recreation Area, said he personally had nothing against the idea.
