The Odegaard family received Jan. 15 the first annual South Dakota Pork Producers Council (SDPPC) Family of the Year Award.

This is a new award created to honor a pork-producing family who has contributed to the long-term success of the industry through leadership and pork promotion on the local, state or national level.

Odegaard farms began when Lake Preston resident Randy Odegaard’s grandfather, Charles, began raising Chester Whites and then turned the operation over to Randy's father, Marvin, in the early 1930s.

Randy has been involved in pork production his entire life and was a partner with his father and brother Wayne from the beginning. In 2005, the partnership grew to include Michelle Malone, Sharon Odegaard, Shane Odegaard, Shaun Odegaard and Justin Odegaard, operating as Odegaard Family Farms.

Odegaard Farms operates a 600-head farrow-to-finish farm.  The Odegaards also operate a cow-calf operation and a diversified cropping operation.
