The Lady Bulldogs defied the odds Feb. 28 and beat their third-ranked District 5B rivals, the Castlewood Warriors, 59-37 to advance to the Region 3B championship.

De Smet lost by one point in their first game of the season against Castlewood, but capturing the district title never really seemed in doubt in the rematch last Saturday. The game felt almost like a home match-up surrounded by Madison High School Gym’s “Bulldog” insignia and maroon and gold colors. The Lady Bulldogs were up by 12 points at half and Castlewood never caught up.

The Lady Bulldogs face Sanborn Central-Woonsocket at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Region 3B championship at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. The Blackhawks finished their season with a 14-6 record before winning District 6B this year. They finished second in last year’s state tournament.

The State B wrestling tournament also took place Feb. 27-28 in Rapid City , Arlington sophomore Haydn Gilbertson placed seventh at 106 pounds for the Kingsbury Knights, but De Smet senior Brody Harkness had a tough end — knocked out in overtime Friday night, a win short of placing at 120. As for Wyatt Perry, the De Smet senior got there at 182, but not for long, losing two matches on Friday.
