“Jones is a good scrappy basketball team. We’re starting out with the four and five seed matchup right away,” coach Doug Osthus said. “We feel like we started the state tournament a couple of weeks ago with the caliber of the teams we’ve played. We’re ready to go.”
The Lady Bulldogs brought home a 53-44 Region 3B championship win March 6 against the Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks at the Swiftel Center in Brookings, with a wall of maroon and gold clad De Smet fans cheering the home team on to victory.
Senior Kelli Aughenbaugh scored 18 points and had four rebounds. Sophomore Shannon Poppen scored 16 points, had six rebounds, one assist and two steals. Senior Rylie Osthus scored nine points, had seven rebounds, nine assists and two steals. Senior Andrea Pommer scored nine points with three 3-point field goals in the first quarter. She had five rebounds and three assists. Senior Alex Wolkow scored one point and had six rebounds.
Myah Selland was top scorer for Sanborn Central-Woonsocket with 28 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
The girls head to Huron Wednesday night in preparation for the Jones County game and De Smet High School Principal Jim Altenburg has arranged for early release at noon Thursday so that fans can attend. He has also called off classes Friday in support of the girls’ second-round game. The games will be webcast on the South Dakota Public Broadcasting website and televised live on SDPB-1 (Channel 8).
De Smet Lady Bulldog fans are encouraged to dress in theme to show support at the State B tournament. Thursday is “Gold” Friday is “Blackout” and Saturday is “Crazy Bulldog Fan.”
