De Smet native Kristy (Hansen) Hubbard began a new position March 16 as director for the De Smet Events and Wellness Center.

Hubbard is a 1985 graduate of De Smet High School and attended Northern State University in Aberdeen.

She and her husband, Dan, have four grown children, Jesse, Abby, Haley and Kallie.

“No grandkids yet, but we have a lot of ‘grandpets,’” she said.

The Hubbard family lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, San Antonio, Texas, Fayetteville, N.C., and Apple Valley, Minn., during Dan’s years in the service.

They moved back to De Smet 13 years ago.

Before taking the director’s job, Hubbard worked as a supervisor for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at the Huron airport. She has also worked with the TSA in Minneapolis, Minn., Sioux Falls and Brookings.

“I’m glad to have the opportunity to work in my home town,” she said.

Along with scheduling and overseeing events at the new center, Hubbard is in charge of the city swimming pool and the summer baseball program. “Hopefully, we will eventually add more summer programs,” she said.

Hubbard is working at city hall in De Smet until construction on the center is completed.

“The ceilings are painted and they are working on the sheetrock,” Hubbard said, “It’s amazing how fast it goes.”

The center is expected to open by the first week in June. Hubbard said they already have events scheduled for the first three weekends in June and the first two weekends in July.
