“Beehive” returns to the De Smet stage this summer. The musical revue, first performed locally in 2001, illustrates the influence of female singers on the rock-and-roll music scene throughout the 1960’s.
Directed by Trey Karlen, with Jenni Karlen as musical director, “Beehive” will be the first De Smet Community Theater performance in the new De Smet Event and Wellness Center.
Karlen and his cast first presented “Beehive” in 2001 at the Kingsbury County Country Club in De Smet. He said the show was such a big hit that they.
put on an additional performance at the De Smet High School auditorium and then took the show on the road to several area towns.
Tristin Gruenhagen, Lynette (Paulson) Cross, Jenni Karlen, Katlin Johnson and Tracy Halperin are cast in leading roles. Bobbi Ward, Diane Clayton, Janice Schardin, Vickie Harty, Sydnee Winter, Kristy Hubbard and Darla Gay will play supporting roles. Gruenhagen, Cross and Ward were all part of the 2001 cast.
Construction on the center is scheduled to be completed by the end of May. Performances are planned Thursday through Sunday the first two weeks in July, including a July 4 afternoon performance.
Karlen said the theater part of the center might not be complete before the July performances, but this show is versatile enough to be rehearsed and performed without a stage if necessary.
Karlen also hinted at the possibility of “sneak previews” during the Old Settler’s Day celebration in June.
The crew plans to use about 300 45-rpm records as part of the background scenery. Karlen said if anyone has 45s they would like to donate, they can drop them off at Ward’s Store and Bakery. The records will not be returned.
