For the past half-century in the small towns of South Dakota, the field stretching between present and future has been filled with land mines. Steps have had to be taken to cross that field and ensure a town’s prosperity, growth or relevance, but one misstep and ...

Take, for example, decisions about a town’s schools. Should we join a football co-op with the neighboring town, or should we soldier on with our own kids, risking being left out of an equitable arrangement later on? Should we merge our district with another to cut costs, knowing that we’ll surrender the economic and social energy that a town’s school provides?
