De Smet eight-graders, Reyna Beck and her brother, Baylor, both earned medals Oct. 24 at the state cross-country meet in Sioux Falls.

“It was a great accomplishment for Baylor and Reyna to earn a medal at the state meet,” coach Pat Wheeler said. “Both did their workouts at 6:30 in the morning. They definitely earned their success this year.”

Reyna placed 19th in the girls 5,000-meter run with a time of 21 minutes, eight seconds. Aleah Steger of Ipswich was first in 19:17. The Ipswich girls were first in team points with 23.

Baylor Beck was 24th in the boys 5,000 with a time of 18:10. Daniel Buckhalter of Bison was first with 16:54. James Valley Christian boys were first in team points with 20.

Eighth-grader Emily Martens ran but was unable to finish because of breathing problems.

“Emily had a great season and will be ready to do well next year,” Wheeler said.
