Glenda Odegaard of rural Lake Preston retired from the food service industry at the end of 2015 after more than 30 years when she and her husband, Randy, sold their De Smet business, Countryview Catering, to Kim and Josh Nelson, owners of 3rd Street Bar & Grille in De Smet.
But the Odegaards went out in style. On Jan. 13, they won the 2015 Restaurant of the Year Award from the South Dakota Pork Producers Council during the organization’s annual banquet at the Sioux Falls Ramkota.
The Odegaards wish the new owners well.
“There is a lot of potential with this business,” Glenda said.
Kim and Josh Nelson purchased Countryview Catering in January.
The Nelsons purchased 3rd Street Bar & Grille in De Smet in June 2014. Catering services are an extension of that business and falls under the umbrella of 3rd Street Bar & Grille’s liquor license. This allows the option of full bar service for events within the city. Along with the bar, the Nelsons will continue to lease the catering building on Calumet Avenue. Josh will continue to work full-time at Quality Tool in Brookings and leave the cooking to Kim.
Kim is no stranger to the business, having been a caterer in Brookings for more than 25 years. She began KJ Lemonade in 1995 by selling fresh-squeezed lemonade and blooming onions from a food truck at art festivals and other events for fun.
“Then family and friends started requesting catering, and it grew from there,” she said.
Kim said they can handle any event, large or small. They are willing to travel to locations and they also offer their own local venues.
