Staying in shape can be challenging. Especially as we get older, it requires attention to diet, lifestyle, and above all, getting some exercise. Finding an exercise that we enjoy can make a big difference in whether or not we actually go out and do that exercise! While the most popular exercise Americans engage in is walking (30.0%), running hits the top five at 7.0%. It ranks higher even than exercises like cycling, golf and aerobics.

While running is great exercise, there’s more to it than simply burning off the calories. It’s also about courses and events, and people getting together to strive for a common goal. It’s an activity that brings people together, and that’s something the town of De Smet knows something about.

Each year, there are two race events in De Smet. One is the Wilder Run. It’s a 5K/10K held in June during the Old Settler’s Day celebration. The other is the Spirit Lake Road Race held each year on the 4th of July. It offers a variety of distances for runners and walkers so that everyone can get involved!

In addition to running, remember you can always walk indoors no matter the weather outside at the De Smet Event Center for free. The weather is always good indoors here! And there are many other sports and recreational events happening each year in De Smet.
