There are amazing benefits to planting trees. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, trees reduce energy consumption, help with storm water management and erosion control, and generally increase property values. While knowledge of these benefits is fairly common, there are many lesser known benefits as well. For these reasons, the Tree City USA program was started by the Arbor Day Foundation back in 1976.

If a community wants to participate in the program, it must first meet its four core standards. Desiring to become a Tree City USA, De Smet was required to achieve the following:

1) establish a tree board

2) adopt a tree ordinance

3) develop a comprehensive community forestry program and

4) hold an official Arbor Day celebration

After accomplishing the above tasks, De Smet was named a Tree City USA. There are over 3400 of them in the United States, but just 30 in South Dakota. DE Smet has now been recognized as a Tree City USA for the 15th consecutive year!

Managing trees for future generations is one example of De Smet’s progressive attitude towards community and quality of life.
